They are the type of earring used when ears are pierced for the first time, as they are lightweight and are unlikely to become snagged in clothing.

Their smaller size enables the wearer to acclimatize to the sensation of wearing earrings, before possibly moving on to more complex earrings, such as dangle or hoop earrings. The fact that studs tend to be lightweight is also important in ensuring that a new piercing heals easily, without the additional strain of a heavier earring, which could tear the earlobe.

Stud earrings for pierced ears are held in place by a “post-and-back” system. The post is attached to the earring itself, which is frequently circular in shape, and is then pushed through the pierced ear, to be held in place by a “back”, that pushes or screws onto the post in order to hold the earring in place. This system has the effect of making the earring look as if it is floating on the earlobe or ear cartilage; it is difficult to see how the earring is held in place as the connecting mechanism is behind the ear.

Stud earrings, though often circular in shape, come in a plethora of forms, and also vary widely in material and colour. Stud earrings can be made of a range of metals, from cheaper ones, such as sterling silver, to the more expensive gold and coloured-gold alloys, such as white gold or rose gold.
