The different proportions of metals in the alloy lead to a variation in price, colour and performance. The higher the proportion of gold used, the more expensive the metal alloy will be. The high carat gold, 18ct, tends to stand up to everyday wear better than 9ct and so maintains a good look for longer.

However, this is more of a concern when choosing, for example, an engagement or wedding ring than a pair of earrings, not commonly worn daily. Therefore, many people choose 9ct and 14ct for their earrings as these carry a lower price.
